Zalkod

Zalkod is a village in Sárospatak District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 184.

Location

It lies on the left bank of the Bodrog and the right bank of the Tisza.

The neighbouring settlements are Viss to the north-east, Kenézlő to the east, Szabolcs to the south-east, Timár to the south, Bodrogkeresztúr to the south-west, Bodrogkisfalud to the west and Olaszliszka to the north-west.

History

Zalkod is an old village from the 1200s. Its name was first written as Zalgoch in a church tax list. In 1406, it belonged to the Újfalussy family, and in 1470, to the Óbégányi family. At the end of the 18th century and start of the 19th century, families like Csapó, Hangácsy, Komjáthy, and Poroszlay owned it. In the early 20th century, it was owned by the heirs of Mór Rothmann.

Population

In 2022, 85.3% of the population identified as Hungarian, 1.1% said Roma, 0.5% said Rusyn, and 1.1% said other non-local nationalities (14.7% did not answer; because of dual identities, the total can be more than 100%). For religion, 32.1% were Roman Catholic, 6% were Reformed, 15.8% were Greek Catholic, 0.5% were other Christian, and 0.5% had no religion (44.6% did not answer).
