Administrator / Bureaucrat / Checkuser / Oversighter

Permissions

There are many kinds of special permissions that users can be granted. These include:

Rollbacker is a user who can quickly revert changes by other users. See Wikipedia:Rollback feature.
Flood is a very short-term permission that a user can get from any administrator to make lots of small edits in a row. When using the flood permission, a user’s edits will be hidden by default from Special:RecentChanges.
Patroller is a user who can review new pages that other users make by marking them "patrolled". Any pages a patroller makes do not have to be reviewed by others.
Administrator (also called an "admin" or "sysop") is a user who can delete and protect pages and block users. Admins can also grant the rollback, flood and patroller permissions.
Bureaucrat (also called a "crat") is a user who can grant and revoke the admin and bot permissions.
Checkuser is a user who can see private information about editors (for example, their IP addresses).
Oversight is a user who can hide private information from everyone except other oversighters and stewards.
Transwiki importer is a user who has use of the import tool to move pages here from other projects. This is not to be confused with importer, who can upload XML files using the import tool. *Importer is not granted on this wiki.
Uploader is a user who can upload files locally on this wiki. This permission is granted temporarily and will be removed once the task is complete.
IPExempt is a right given to trusted named users who may edit from an IP address that would otherwise be blocked through no fault of their own. It can also be used to allow editing via an anonymizing proxy when need is demonstrated and the user is trusted to not abuse the user right. Editors granted IP address block exemption should be aware that breach of this policy, including unauthorized editing via proxies, or significant concerns over account abuse or other conduct, may lead to the removal of the IP address block exemption. Duration is at the administrators decision. If you still need it when it expires you can re-request it by posting on the administrators notice board, or emailing the administrators email list simple-admins-l@lists.wikimedia.org. Also use this email if you have any private information to share. To request this permission email simple-admins-l@lists.wikimedia.org.

Adding a new request

Rollbacker

You must be an active member of Simple English Wikipedia, preferably with some experience in reverting vandalism.

Rollback must never be used to revert in edit wars, or to remove good-faith changes. Use the undo feature for this, and give a reason. Rollback does not let you give a reason when reverting. It must only be used to revert bad changes. It can and will be revoked if misused.

Flood

Requests for the temporary (short-term) flood permission should be made on an administrator’s talk page, on the #wikipedia-simple ^connect IRC channel, or at the Administrators' noticeboard.

Uploader

Requests for temporary (short-term) file upload permissions should be made on the Administrators' noticeboard. An administrator should be notified once the uploads are done so that the permission can be removed.
Image uploads are not allowed, this should only be requested for uploading other media (such as audio clips)

Administrator

Please read the criteria for adminship before nominating another user or yourself, to make sure the nominated user meets the criteria for becoming an administrator. You may want to look at the archives first so you can see why other people’s requests have succeeded or failed.

Administrator tools are there to better help the community. They do not make certain users better than others. To nominate a candidate for adminship, please follow these instructions:

Bureaucrat, Checkuser, or Oversight

For the bureaucrat, checkuser, or oversight permission, a user first needs to be an administrator. There are special requirements at Wikipedia:Criteria for adminship for these users.

Okay. Essentially what happened was, when trying to revert vandalism, I made a bunch of mistakes that were getting disruptive, so ToBeFree blocked me. Therefore, since I couldn't revert vandalism or edit the CVUA page, CVUA had to be paused. My unblock was declined since they thought a month of pause would be good, and that I hadn't clearly gotten across what I was saying and it seemed like I thought Counter-Vandalism was a race. Anyways, my improvments. I realize what I did wrong (persistently being unintentially disruptive during Counter-Vandalism) and am committed to continuing to improve. While I obviously can't show that I've improved on enwiki, as far I can see I've been fine over here (which is, after all, where I'm asking for rollback). I think, based on your activities on enwiki, you should wait a while for RB and use undo or Twinkle to deal with reverts. Unlike enwiki we don't have hundreds of editors reviewing recent changes and bad edits made as good faith changes can slip by us. I appreciate that everyone makes mistakes and I'm not immune from that myself having RB is not a permission to use whilst learning it's a permission where you act practically perfectly. I am aware of that. Do you have an instance where I have done something wrong on this wiki? Because, this is after all an issue of whether or not I should have it here. As far I know, I have been fine here. Think about it, if not for my enwiki account, would you still be oppossed to giving me rollback? If the answer is no, then think if behavior from 3 weeks ago, that I have apologized for and committ to improving, and that, as far as I know, I have not repeated here, is reason to deny this request.@Fr33kman Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 10:43, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the governor of one state broke the law and got fired from office would you vote for that person if he ran for governor in the next state? Probably not. This case is one of the few times where an editors actions on a different wiki has consequences here. For now you'll have to wait. No, I would not. If you think I am not ready, than okay. However, breaking a law, and making accidental mistakes (that was fixed without too much issue) are very different. When would you say that you be willing to give this to me? Hello! Thanks for volunteering. It looks like you've had this permission a few times before, and then went inactive (which is fine). Could you give me a little overview as to when it is suitable (or give some examples) of when an item should be oversighted rather than revdel'ed? To some extent revdel will do a lot of times but there are times where suppression is needed. Revdel is good at hiding crude or offensive edits and suppression if best used in cases where personal information is being posted and needs hiding even from the admins fr33k man 05:55, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No objections here, although about the oversightable thing that someone pointed out (and they opposed; I'm also not an oversighter), it would be a good idea to probably not repeat that again, learn from your mistakes, and go on. Oppose I'd like to assume as much good faith as possible, but oversighted diffs were posted to RfCU by you back in December 2023. I don't know why they were oversighted and the answers to the concern at the time were that it was basically a bad choice of wording (link). Having admins who post oversightable material then become oversighters isn't the best of looks for our wiki though, regardless of reasoning. Additionally, I don't see much of a need for oversighters at the moment and it was only in November you got CU again. If my assumption that the oversight was due to oversightable material was wrong, I will strike it, but my oppose vote will certainly be remaining. Going from requesting admin to becoming checkuser and oversighter within 8 months is extremely unusual. I can't think of any other user that has gained checkuser and oversighter that quickly. I'm not going to go so far as to call it hat collecting, but you really need to slow down. We do not have any need for oversighters at this moment in time, we voted in a new one just a year ago. I also have major concerns with the way you have been using your admin rights: you accused a user you incorrectly blocked of personally attacking you when they didn't, it was only a month ago I had to ask for you to stop undermining other admin actions without explanation (which you're still doing), a few days ago you gave flood out for a user adding references and you are currently treating RfD as a vote which is behaviour administrators actively try to stamp out, yet here you are doing it anyway, ignoring what is written on the top of the RfD page. To be frank, this is below what I would expect from any administrator, let alone a checkuser wanting to be an oversighter already. I asked them if it’s possible, and they felt it was okay to give, as I am a trusted user here for the short term, which was 1 hour. Oppose per Ferien - The analysis by Ferien above is extremely concerning and whilst we all make mistakes those 3 mistakes cannot be ignored especially when they're only a few months apart, I'm also disappointed with them ignoring Feriens reply and making a generally irrelevant reply to it. I'll be honest nevermind OS I'm honestly questioning their suitability for adminship to be honest, Anyway given the concerns raised above I don't feel they're suitable for OS at this time. Neutral I could go either way, and will try to remember to come back to this. I think that Fr33kman is a good admin and I respect him. I also don't personally give any weight to comments along the lines of "we don't need more X" at RFPs. However, I do take Ferien's concerns seriously, and it makes me hesitant to support. With "we don't need more X" comments, it kinda depends which right you are looking at and how you look at it. With something like admin or rollbacker, there are very few downsides to having plenty of people so long as they are trusted/competent enough for it. But with oversight and checkuser, sensitive information is involved (which is why you have to be identified to the WMF and 18+ to do it) that is you could argue is better having in fewer hands than more. Not saying that's the case for this situation as Fr33kman is already a checkuser, just in general. --Ferien (talk) 15:36, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Without knowing the suppressed content, I can't say how inappropriate it was. I can think of some cases where it could be a normal situation but later privacy concerns were brought in. I suggest Fr33kman to withdraw this for now, and try again a while later if they feel the project would still benefit from them having the tools. I'm investigating a bit more, I don't think the "we don't need more" arguments are particularly beneficial. We should give tools out to those who can wield them correctly. A question which deserves asking is: "To which problem is this an answer?". As far as I can see, none. We have enough in place to do what needs to be done.
