An ahnentafel is a family tree where people are shown in a numbered list instead of a tree.

In an ahnentafel, the person is listed as number 1, the father is 2, the mother is 3. Then, the grandparents can be added:

  • the father's father is 4
  • the father's mother is 5
  • the mother's father is 6
  • and the mother's mother is 7.

This can continue even farther, including the great-grandparents:

  • the father's father's father is 8
  • the father's father's mother is 9
  • the father's mother's father is 10
  • and so on.
