Summary

Description
English: A schematic showing an Ackermann (or conventional) steering linkage. The image was made based on the images at http://www.carquestchassistraining.com/ss_steering_linkages.htm , http://www.carquestchassistraining.com/sus_tie_rod.htm , http://www.motorera.com/dictionary/pa.htm , http://img.carwale.com/apollo/tyre02.jpg and based on information in the book "Zo werkt uw auto" by Rien Tholenaar & Carel Zaal.
  • 1: steering wheel
  • 2: steering shaft
  • 3: steering gearbox
  • 4A: pitman arm
  • 4B: idler arm
  • 5: centerlink
  • 6: inner tie rod
  • 7: adjusting sleeve
  • 8: tie rod arms

yellow: suspension shafts, shock absorbers & coil springs pink/red: steering linkage light green/dark green: tie rod arms/tie rod blue/light blue: (lower) frame/front part of the frame (there are 2 frame arms connected to each of the tie rod arms; the first arm (and the second for the frame of the rear wheels) has 2 standing pipes (in a cross-like setup) connecting the lower tie rod arm with the upper one, aswell as providing an extra attachment point for the steering linkage grey: wheel rim orange: wheel shaft (would normally run all the way trough around the height of the steering linkage, not shown for reasons of clearity brown: wheel tyre

Note that the shock absorber/spring are connected to the upper frame (not shown) at the top; this holds the shock absorber/spring in place (together with the bottom connection). The top yellow axle is thus not intented to keep it in place; rather it is used to transfer shocks.
