Description

Color woodcut by Kitagawa Utamaro, 1790. Modern reprint, between 1918 and 1923.

Poppin o fuku musume (Young lady blowing on a poppin). Ukiyo-e print shows a young woman, probably the daughter of an upper middle-class merchant, half-length portrait, turned to the left, blowing into a toy. The exotic toy glass pipe, which made different noises depending on whether air was blown or sucked, is referred to variously onomatopoeically as poppin (
), popin (
) or popen (
) or as bīdoro (
) from the Portuguese word vidro meaning "glass". The toys were popular in Japan during the early 1790s, when Utamaro is believed to have designed this print.
The print appears in two of Utamaro's print series, Fujin Sōgaku Jittai ("Ten Physiognomies of Women") and Fujo Ninsō Juppin ("Ten Classes of Women's Physiognomy"), but from the inscription in the upper right (
) shows it is from the latter series.
English names for the print include "Woman/Girl Blowing a Glass Toy/Pipe", "Woman/Girl Blowing a Glass Noisemaker", "Woman/Girl Blowing a Poppin/Poppen/Popin" and "Woman/Girl Blowing a Bidoro/Vidro". Japanese names for the print include
and
.
