James Buchanan Barnes is a fictional character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, he made his first appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), where he was played by Sebastian Stan.[2] Stan later returned in the movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and What If...? (2021–present). He will also star in the upcoming movie Thunderbolts* (2025).

Originally Steve Rogers' childhood best friend and an ally of his during World War II, Barnes falls off a cliff and is found by Hydra. They experiment on him and make him an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Barnes becomes himself again after reuniting with Rogers and going to Wakanda. He dies in the Blip and is brought back to life five years later. After Rogers' retirement, he and Sam Wilson, who becomes the new Captain America, fight the Flag Smashers.
