Hamilton County is a county in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2020, 14,004 people lived there.[1] Its county seat is Jasper, Florida.[2]

Hamilton County was created in 1827 from portions of Jefferson County. It was named for Alexander Hamilton, first United States Secretary of the Treasury.

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 519.31 square miles (1,345.0 km2), of which 514.86 square miles (1,333.5 km2) (or 99.14%) is land and 4.45 square miles (11.5 km2) (or 0.86%) is water.[3]

The Suwannee River forms the borders it shares with all of the neighboring Florida counties - Suwannee County, Columbia County, and Madison County.

At the 2020 census, 14,004 people lived in the county. There were 4,690 households and 2,435 people who did not live in households. The population density was 27.2 people per square mile (10.5/km²). The median age was 43.0 years (41.1 for males, 45.9 for females).

Of the total population, 19.1% were under 18 years old, 62.0% were 18 to 64, and 18.9% were 65 or over. Males made up 57.7% and females made up 42.3% of the people. The population was 54.5% White (non-Latino), 31.6% Black (non-Latino), 10.4% Hispanic or Latino, and 2.7% Two or more races (non-Latino). Less than 1% of the people were from other races.

Of the 4,690 households, 3,072 (65.5%) were families, 1,365 (29.1%) had children under 18, 1,933 (41.2%) had a married couple, and 1,372 (29.3%) had one person living alone. The average household size was 2.5 people. There were 5,596 housing units, and 83.8% had people living in them all year. Of these households, 72.9% were owner-occupied, while 27.1% were renters.[4][5]

As of 2022, the median (middle) yearly income for a household was about $47,668, and the median income for a family was about $52,202.[6] The per capita income was about $17,331.[7] About 17.6% of families[8] and 26.4% of all people in Hamilton County lived below the poverty line. This includes 34.0% of children under 18 years old and 17.5% of people over 65 years old.[9]
