This template links to an unslashed target page [[ SY Raven (1889) ]], but it shows the slash: "S/Y": S/Y Raven (1889)
Usage[change source]
- To show "SY" (unslashed), use {{SY}}: SY Raven (1889)
- When the target pagename has a "/" slash, use {{Ship}}:

Usage[change source]
This is a typing short cut for linking to steamship articles named in the format "SY Shipname (year)", showing "S/Y". Since ship names are italicized in article text, linking to them in the usual manner means typing everything twice, such as [[SY Shipname (ID)|S/Y ''Shipname'' (ID)]]. This template halves that to {{S/Y|Shipname|ID}}.

{{S/Y|Ship Name}}{{S/Y|Ship Name|ID}}, where ID can be the hull number, launch year, or pennant number, as specified in the article title.

Label format options[change source]
- To show "S/Y", use {{S/Y}}: S/Y Raven (1889)
- To link to S/Y Manitou, use {{Ship|S/Y|Manitou}}
By default, the wikilink is build like this:
{{S/Y|Raven|1889}}, the targetpage is
[[SY Raven (1889)]].- Then the template by default adds the formatted label:
[[targetpage|label]][[SY Raven (1889)|S/Y ''Raven'' (1889)]], showing as:- S/Y Raven (1889).
The default label can be changed with a simple parameter. The extra third position, unnamed parameter allows setting which elements of the ship's full name are shown in the wikilink. It sets the label in the link:
For example, in your article, the hull number (disambiguator) may not be needed to show. In that case, add option |2, and the result is:
