Haram (Arabic: حَرَام, ḥarām, [ħaˈraːm]) is an Islamic Arabic term meaning ‘forbidden’.[1]: 471  It is the opposite of halal, which means "permissible".

Muslims have strict rules on what is considered "haram":

  • Animals that are not herbivores and/or does not chew the cud are not suitable for eating.
  • Eating pork is forbidden. "He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." (Quran 2:173)
  • If an animal was treated poorly, or was tortured while slaughtering, that animal is considered haram.[2]
  • Alcohol is considered haram.
  • Any intoxicating substance that has no medicinal purpose is considered haram.
