Cognac, Charente

Cognac is a city in the Charente, France. It is the sub-prefecture of the Charente. About 19.000 people live in the city. The area where the city stands today has been inhabited since Paleolithic times; there are various traces of settlement, among them a dolmen. Other cities nearby are Angoulême, Jarnac and Saintes. The drink called Cognac was developed in the city, in the 17th century. Today, the city is known for a festival of crime movies, and a festival of blues music
