European Champion Clubs' Cup
Appearance

The Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (European Champion Clubs' Cup), generally known in English as the European Cup, was the name of an annual football tournament organised by UEFA from 1955/56 to 1991/92. It is also the name of the trophy awarded to the tournament winners. The trophy has been recreated several times. It was originally donated by the French sports newspaper L'Équipe.[1]
The tournament was rebranded in 1992 as the UEFA Champions League, first contested in 1992/93, but the winners' prize is the same trophy. Unlike the Champions League, the European Cup was limited to national league champions only, plus the trophy holders. Also, it was a straight knockout competition. All ties except the final were played over two legs.
