English: Amos Tappan Akerman ( February 23, 1821 - December 21, 1880) served as United States Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant from 1870-1872. Akerman was born on February 23, 1821 in Portsmouth. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy high school, and then attended Dartmouth College graduating as a member of the class of 1842. He studied law, eventually moving to Elberton, in 1850, where he opened up a law firm.
