English: Born in Elberton, Elbert County, Ga., September 21, 1820. Served as Florida Attorney General in 1846 and 1847; member of the State House in 1847; Secretary of State in 1848; served in the State Senate in 1849-1850; Democrat Congressman to the Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1857); served in the Senate of the Confederate States 1862-1865; State Supreme Court Justice in 1865 and 1866; member of the 1885 Constitutional Convention; 2nd term as a State Supreme Court Justice from July 1, 1887-1890 (Chief Justice 1887-1889). He died in Chipley, Washington County, Fla., on May 5, 1903.
