Object history
Deutsch: Mosbach wurde durch die Staufer zur Stadt erhoben (1241 erste Nennung als Stadt). Auch nach der Verpfändung an die Pfalzgrafen im Jahre 1329, aus der es nicht wieder gelöst wurde, galt Mosbach bis Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts als Reichsstadt. Als Reichsstadt und als pfälzische Stadt führte Mosbach in Siegeln (erstes Siegel ab 1330 nachweisbar) und Wappen den Reichsadler. Später kam zur Unterscheidung ein Brustschild hinzu, der bei Merian (1645) einen Schrägbalken, andernorts die Buchstaben OM enthält. Die Bedeutung des Schrägbalkens ist nicht geklärt; OM könnte als „oppidum Mosbacense" (Stadt Mosbach) aufzulösen sein. Im 19. Jahrhundert erhielt der Schrägbalken die badischen Farben. Nach der Vereinigung Mosbachs mit Neckarelz (1975) wurden das Wappen in der 1898 nach Inhalt und Tingierung festgelegten Form und die Flagge vom Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe am 18. März 1977 neu verliehen.
