Object history

Deutsch: Die Burg Veldenstein kam als Stiftungsgut an das 1008 gegründete Bistum Bamberg und blieb bis zur Säkularisation 1802 in dessen Besitz. Die Burg war Amtsburg und Residenzburg der Bamberger Fürstbischöfe und wird erstmals 1269 als novum castrum (neues Haus) erwähnt. Der unterhalb der Burg entstandene Ort erhielt unter Bischof Weigand von Redwitz (1522 bis 1556) Marktrechte. Aus dieser Zeit ist das erste Siegel überliefert. Es zeigt im geteilten Schild oben den geminderten Bamberger Löwen ohne Schrägleiste und den Burgturm. Das gleiche Bild ist in der Bamberger Vasallentafel von 1603 überliefert. Im 19. Jahrhundert wird im Schrifttum eine Wappenverleihung durch den Bamberger Bischof Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck (1653 bis 1672) erwähnt. Vermutlich handelt es sich hierbei um eine Wappenbestätigung. Die heute gebräuchlichen Farben orientieren sich an einer Zeichnung von 1811.
