Object history
Deutsch: Der Bronzestempel eines Siegels ist aus der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts erhalten. Er zeigt die Umschrift S. CIVITATIS IN OTINGEN. Im Schild steht das Andreaskreuz, der heraldische Schragen, aus dem Stammwappen der Grafen und späteren Fürsten von Oettingen, den einstigen Stadtherren. In einem barocken Siegel um 1700 wird die als Verzierung gedachte waagrechte Strichelung als heraldische Schraffierung interpretiert. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert ist seitdem das Feld blau. Die rote Feldfarbe ist aber die richtige. Sie ist seit 1683 belegt. Die Grafen von Oettingen nannten sich nach dem Ort, der schon im 13. Jahrhundert als Markt bezeichnet wurde. Der Zeitpunkt der Stadterhebung ist nicht bekannt.
