Object history
Deutsch: In den ältesten Siegeln aus dem 14. Jahrhundert bis 1543 ist der Schild gespalten, vorne steht der sogenannte fränkische Rechen, hinten das von Silber und Rot gevierte Wappen der Grafen von Castell. Beide Wappenbilder weisen auf die damaligen Herrschaftsinhaber hin. Die Grafen hatten seit dem 11. Jahrhundert die Vogteirechte inne. Seit 1328 teilten sich das Bistum Würzburg und die Grafen von Castell die Herrschaft in Volkach. Seit 1520 gehörte die Stadt ganz zum Hochstift Würzburg. Der Würzburger Fürstbischof Konrad von Bibra (1540 bis 1544) verlieh der Stadt 1544 ein neues Wappen. Anstelle des Castell�schen Wappens trat nun ein blauer Schrägwellenbalken in goldenem Feld, der redend für den Fluss Volkach, steht. Das goldene Feld stellt die fruchtbare Umgebung dar. Im Zuge der Wappenrevision von 1819 tingierte man den fränkischen Rechen silber und blau, der Schrägfluss stand nun blau in silbernem Feld. Die Wiederannahme der richtigen Farben nach dem Wappenbrief von 1544 erfolgte 1952.
