Object history
Deutsch: Wittnau war im frühen und hohen Mittelalter der Mittelpunkt der Besitzungen des Klosters St. Gallen im Breisgau. Die erste Nennung des Ortes zum Jahre 768 ist zugleich die erste Nennung einer Kirche. Das am 3. September 1963 vom Innenministerium zusammen mit der Flagge verliehene Wappen spielt mit der Kirche, deren Lage auf einem Berg und deren Turmform der Situation der heutigen Pfarrkirche Wittnaus entsprechen, und dem St. Galler Bären auf diese Gegebenheiten an. Die Siegeltradition wurde bei den Bemühungen um das Gemeindewappen, die bereits 1899 eingesetzt hatten, nicht berücksichtigt. Die Siegel des 19. Jahrhunderts (ältester bekannter Abdruck 1811) und Grenzsteine zeigen ein nicht zu deutendes Landschaftsbild, bestehend aus Haus, Baum, Mond und Stern, wozu im ältesten Typar noch eine Pflugschar kommt.
