Summary

Description Western Australian Government Railway 3'6" gauge Class "Xa" or "Tribal" 1,100 hp diesel electric 2-Do-2 No. Xa1405 "Warienga", built by Metropolitan Vickers, Stockton-on-Tees in 1956 with a Crossley HST V8 engine. Ordered as "X" Class locos, after the delivery of the first batch of "X's", it was decided to alter those still building to be able to operate in multiple; nose gangways were also fitted to facilitate crews movement from one loco to another (shades of early BR locos). They suffered the same engine and wheelbase teething troubles as the "X" locos, but once solved they were very reliable and popular. They hauled the famous "Australind" Express. X 1405 was withdrawn in early 1987 but re-instated a few months later to haul the last loco-hauled "Australind" and a few special enthusiast tour trains. At the Western Australian Railway Museum, Bassendean, Perth WA, 2/10.
