This flag is a debate[change source]

Some people think this flag is racist and not. I never understand why the nickname is "apartheid flag", i mean this flag wasn't made for apartheid. This flag is from the 1920s and existed before apartheid in the 1940s.

If apartheid didn't exist at all in South African history this flag wouldn't be controversial and South Africa would probably keep using this 1928 flag today.

@Auntof6: does the British flag seem to be appropriate for South Africa's national flag from 1928-94, especially when South Africa was a former British colony. ColorfulSmoke (talk) 19:58, 8 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The British flag is incorporated into the Oranje Blanje Blou, despite the British raging two wars and inprisoning women and children in concentration camps in what would today be seen as a war crime equal to that of Hitler's camps. Yet, the British flag is not called the slave flag, or the war crime flag. It's simply the union jack. Flags are interesting things with it being solely symbolic, and the meaning of it as a symbol is different to everyone. To many in South Africa (mainly black people), it is symbolic of a powerful oppressive regime, to others (Mainly White people), it is the symbol of a nation that was working towards a fairer country for all, spreading democracy and freedom across Africa, and doing this while protecting everything they built after escaping British rule.
