A basin can be any thing or place that water or other things are held in by gravity.
- A wash basin is bowl-shaped and used for washing hands or food; if it has a drain it is usually called a sink
- A river basin is called a watershed
- An oceanic basin is a low place in the Earth that holds an ocean
- A sedimentary basin is a low place in the Earth that gets filled with dirt and rocks
