A string instrument is a musical instrument that makes sound through vibrating strings and makes the sound louder using one or both of the two main methods:

• A hollow body with either perforations where the sound comes out or a microphone inside the chamber connected to an amplifier.
• Pick-ups convert the string vibration directly into an electrical signal which is amplified and used to drive a loudspeaker.
