Nederlands: Negatief. Hoewel de export van thee nooit dezelfde omvang als die van koffie of suiker zou bereiken, werd de Java-thee een groot succes. Net als koffie werd het vooral geplant op in erfpacht uitgegeven 'woeste' gronden, die bijna per definitie vaak ver van de dorpen lagen. Daardoor was het aantrekken van arbeidskrachten een probleem. Een goed beeld van deze samenleving geeft de roman van Hella Haasse Heren van de thee. Theeplukken werd (en wordt) beschouwd als een vrouwelijke bezigheid. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
