A kill screen, often occurring in games of the Golden Age, are screens that prevent progress from the player. The screens in some games stop the game with gibberish or otherwise impossible figures. In Pac-Man, at a certain level the screen overflows and spreads fruits and ghosts across the arcade machine's screen.
