Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento (29 September 1943 – 18 August 1989) was a Colombian liberal politician and journalist.

Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento was born in Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia. He ran for the Presidency of Colombia two times. Galan ran under the Liberal party in 1989 and sought the nomination for the 1990 presidential election.

Death[change | change source]

On August 18, 1989, Galán was shot five times by hitmen hired by the drug cartels of Pablo Escobar as he walked onto the stage to give a speech in front of people during a campaign rally in the town of Soacha, Cundinamarca. He was 45 years old. Ten others were wounded in the gunfire.
