Sendai (Japanese: 仙台市) is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, and the largest city in the Tōhoku Region. About 1 million people live there. On March 11, 2011, an earthquake and a tsunami destroyed the city and its surroundings.

In 1601, Date Masamune built the Sendai castle; and the modern-day city of Sendai developed around it.[1]

Sendai Airport (仙台空港 Sendai Kūkō) (IATA: SDJ, ICAO: RJSS) is in nearby Natori, Miyagi, 13.6 km (8.5 mi) south southeast of Sendai Station. The airport was badly damaged by the tsunami, but re-opened for limited service the next month.[2] The US State Department said the airport was safe to visit.[3]
