Software categories

Software categories are groups of software. They allow software to be looked at in those categories, instead of looking at each package of software. There are different ways of putting software into categories which each look at the differences of the software in different ways.

Computer software

Computer software can be put into categories on how it is used, and what type it is. There are three main types:

• Application software is the main type of computer program that does tasks. Application software may be multi purpose such as web browsers or word processors or it can have a specific purpose such as accounting software.
• System software is a type of software used to help run the computer and it's other categories of software.
• Computer programming tools like as compilers and linkers are used to send source code to the RAM of the computer.
