Offensive[change source]

The lead may be offensive to those with birth defects:

"Birth defect is the name people use to say that when a baby is born, there are some things that are wrong with it."

The disabled are offended being called disabled for a reason - it is condescending to say they are not normal. I'll change this. -- Matt5678 (talk) 21:42, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After the merge[change source]

Well, I had preferred the title of the page as something like Congenital abnormality because it is easier to understand that it is not derogatory. "Birth defect" does seem a bit stark! However, one way or another, we are saying that a foetus is defective, whilst not imputing any cause or (even less) blame. It is clear that there will always be such cases, even when the conditions of life are close to perfect. The royal families of Europe have suffered genetic damage from inbreeding at a time when genetics was not understood at all. Macdonald-ross (talk) 20:02, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is simple English Wikipedia. It should be easy for everyone to understand. 'Congenital...' only says it was there from birth, it doesn't give a cause. Some conditions are caused by the child's brain taking damage because it doesn't get enough air fast enough. Thats probably different form someone suffering from autism or color blindness, both of which can have genetic causes. If you prefer the other title, move this page there, and leave the redirect. All I was saying was: we already have the content..--Eptalon (talk) 21:18, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
