Not all persons referred to as gypsy in English are in fact ral Romani people. Unfortunately, this mistake is made of paraphrasing all Gypsys yet as Romani, despite the fact that they are not Romani at all and never was. Although these groups share a lifestyle similar to that of European Romani, and their ancestors came from India too, but at different times, they never spoke Romany but their own languages. No connection to European Romani.

Examples:

  • Domlari's (Middle Eastern Gypsys)
  • Lomlari's (Caucasus Mountains/Armenian Gypsys)
  • Lyuli's (Central Asian Gypsy)
  • Abdal's (Anatolian Turkmen Gypys)
  • Sinti's (a population native to Germany)
  • Ashkali's (a population once came from Persia to Balkans)
  • Balkan Egyptian's (a population once came from Egypt to Balkans)

Then Indian progeny communities, often mistaken for gypsy due to resemblance.

  • Agryzhan Tatar's in Tatarstan (descendants of Indian merchants in Russian empire who mixed mainly with Astrakhan Tatars).
  • Hindi's in Istanbul/Turkey (descendants of Indian dervishes who founded Sufi lodges in the Ottoman empire and mixed with the local population of different Backgrounds there).
