Kim Ransa
Introduction
Kim Ransa (1872 - 1919) was a Korean activist and educator.[1] She was greatly trusted by the Korean king, Gojong.[2] She was also awarded with the Order of Merit for the National Foundation.[3] Kim was known for her women empowerment through education.[2]
Early Life
Kim was born in 1872 in Pyongyang, Korea.[1] During this time, the school policy banned the admission of married women.[4] However, Kim convinced the educators. She eventually became a student of Ewha Hakdang in 1896 at age 24.[4] Later, she traveled to the US to study at the Ohio Wesleyan University.[4] She is the first Korean woman to study abroad and get a bachelor’s degree.[2]
Career
Kim was a crucial part of the March First Movement.[5] The March First Movement was an important Korean independence movement from Japan.[6] She additionally taught well-known activists like Yu Gwan Sun.[1] She later returned to Ewha Hakdang to teach.[1]
