Kanmon strait is a strait separating Honshu and Kyushu - two of Japan's four main islands. The strait name is derived from the name of a place of the neighborhood.

The ferry boat between Moji and Shimonoseki is ran by Kanmonkisen.

Land transport[change | change source]

There are four tunnels and bridge.

Kanmon bridge[change | change source]

Kanmon bridge was opening in 1973. It is one of the big bridge in Japan. The length of it is 1068m and the hight of it is 141m above sea. Kanmon bridge available only car.

Kanmon tunnel (Route2)[change | change source]

This tunnel was opening in 1958. There are Two tunnels for car and for pedestrian. The length of tunnel for car is 3461m.

Kanmon railway tunnel (Sanyou line)[change | change source]

This tunnel was opening in 1942. The length of inbound tunnel is 3604m and outbound tunnel is 3614m.

Shin-Kanmon tunnel (Sanyou Shinkansen)[change | change source]

This tunnel was opening in 1975. This tunnel is built for shinkansen. The length of it is 18713m.

Ganryujima[change | change source]

Ganryujima is a small island in Japan. There is between Honshu and Kyushu. The island is located in Kanmon straits. The correct island name is not Ganryujima but Funajima. In 18th century, it is a famous battle between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. In WWII, there is a Japanese army base in the island. Ganryujima is a stage of a lot of drama and movie. Now, there is no people lived in the island. But, Japan pro-wrestling club held a lot of matches.

Shimonoseki War[change | change source]

Shimonoseki War is a battle the domain of Choshu versus England, France, Netherland and America in 19th century. The battle happened at Shimonoseki near Kanmon straits. The domain of Choshu lose the battle because their weapons were out of date. After this war, the domain of Choshu changed their idea from "revere the Emperor and expel the foreigner" to the "opening up of Japan"
