Lily Iona MacKenzie is a Canadian born, naturalized American poet, short story writer, and novelist. A high school dropout, and a mother at 17, in her early years, Lily Iona MacKenzie supported herself as a stock girl for the Hudson’s Bay Company, as a long distance operator for the former Alberta Government Telephone, and as a secretary (Bechtel Corp sponsored her into the States). She also worked as a cocktail waitress at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel, was the first woman employed on the San Francisco docks and almost got her legs broken, founded and managed a homeless shelter in Marin County, co-created THE STORY SHOPPE, a weekly radio program for children, and eventually earned two Master’s degrees, one in Creative Writing and the other in the Humanities from San Francisco State University.

Her reviews, interviews, short fiction, poetry, travel pieces, essays, and memoir have appeared in over 155 American and Canadian venues. Little Red Tree Publishing released her poetry collection All This in 2011.

Her novel Fling! https://www.amazon.com/Fling/dp/B01JSXXL8C/was published by Pen-L Publishing in 2015. Curva Peligrosa, another novel, launched with Regal House Publishing in 2017. Freefall: A Divine Comedy, a third novel will be released by Pen-L Publishing in 1/1/19. Pen-L will also publish Tillie: Portraits of a Canadian Girl in Training.

October 2006 Honorable mention in “Focus on Writers Contest,” Friends of the Library, Sacramento, for a short story, “Biting Through.” October 2001 Honorable mention from 1100 entries for introductory chapter to Fling! in novel category, “Focus on Writers Contest,” Friends of the Library, Sacramento. 1992 Grant from Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation to compile a poetry anthology of Bay Area women poets. 1987 Finalist in Marin Art’s Council poetry grants competition.
