Willem Barents (or Barentsz, probably from Barentzoon, son of Barent) was a Dutch explorer. He was born on Terschelling around 1550, and died on the 20th June 1597 near Novaya Zemlya.
The Barents Sea,[1] Barentsburg and Barents Region were all named after him.
