Buzz Lightyear is one of the main characters in the Toy Story movies. He is the second main character in Toy Story and Toy Story 3, the third main character in Toy Story 2, the fourth main character in Toy Story 4, and the main character in Lightyear and in the spin-off animated movie Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and the television show based on it, called Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. The character was named after the astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

He is voiced by actor Tim Allen in the films, Toy Story Toons, Toy Story Racer, Toy Story 2: The Video Game, commercials and in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins. Patrick Warburton voiced Buzz for the TV series, and Pat Fraley voiced him for a few video games and the attractions in Disney Parks. Mike MacRae currently voices Buzz in various Disney and Pixar video games. Buzz Lightyear is voiced by Chris Evans in Lightyear.

Origin

Buzz Lightyear comes from a very successful line of action figures of the same name. He is designed to look like a "space ranger", an intergalactic crimefighter in a space suit. When Andy receieved Buzz as a birthday present from his mother, the space ranger's presence quickly caught the attention of all of Andy's toys, who were previously led by a cowboy doll named Woody, Andy's favourite toy.

Woody grew more and more jealous of the time Buzz was spending with Andy, and his hatred for the space ranger reached the point of no return. After Woody accidentally knocks Buzz out of the window, he's brought by Andy and his mom to a gas station, where Woody meets Buzz again, and the two fight. Andy's mom drives away, leaving behind Buzz and Woody.

The two toys hitch a ride to Pizza Planet, where Woody plans to jump into the pram being pushed by Andy's mom. However, Buzz jumps into a vending machine shaped like a rocket ship, and after Woody enters to get Buzz out, the claw is operated by Sid, Andy's nextdoor neighbor and toy-torturer, and he wins Buzz, Woody, and a green alien toy.

Sid brings the three toys home and puts them in his room, where Buzz and Woody encounter his mangled, pieced-together toys. The two toys escape Sid's room but evade his dog, with Woody hiding in a closet and Buzz dodging into a living room. On the television, a Buzz Lightyear ad plays, and Buzz finally realises he isn't a real space ranger, but just a toy.

Overcome with sadness, Buzz looks up a window he once believed he could fly through, and decides to give it one more go, refusing to accept the truth. However, after leaping from the bannister, Buzz falls down the stairs and his arm comes off, lying down in defeat.

Woody later finds Buzz being played with by Sid's sister, and brings him back into Sid's room to escape through the window. Andy's toys from his house catch a string of lights thrown by Woody, but Mr. Potato Head threatens to drop it, still believing Woody murdered Buzz. Woody asks Buzz to help prove he's alive, but the depressed toy sarcastically throws Woody his detatched arm.

Woody uses Buzz's arm to pretend Buzz is just out of view, shaking his hand and acting like best friends. But the toys realise Woody is holding Buzz's detatched arm, and let go of the string of lights, condemning Woody to Sid's house forever.

Sid's toys swarm Buzz and Woody goes to rescue him, but it turns out they repaired his arm. Sid then marches into the room carrying a highly dangerous firework, and plans to set it off in the morning with Buzz taped to it.

As Sid sleeps, Woody encourages Buzz, daying that while he might just be a toy, he's still a cool toy, loved by Andy and probably cooler than Woody himself. Inspired by Woody's care for Andy, Buzz rescues Woody from the box he'd trapped in, but the box falling over wakes up Sid, who races outside with Buzz and the firework.

With the help of Sid's toys, Woody stages a rescue, and locks Sid's dog outside. In the back garden, Sid finds Woody on the ground and puts on the barbecue with a matchstick in his holster. Before he can ignite Buzz's rocket, Sid hears Woody's voicebox play. Initially believing he was broken, Sid is horrified to hear Woody call him out by name, using his own toys as an intimidation tactic, warning that if Sid doesn't take better care of his toys, they'll "come after him".

After Woody moves and tells Sid to "play nice", the boy runs screaming from the garden, leaving the toys to celebrate. Buzz and Woody leave to catch up with Andy's mom in the car, as they are moving away. The two toys make it to the moving truck, but Buzz saves Woody from being eaten by Sid's dog, and is left behind. Opening the moving truck, Woody retrieves a remote control car and throws it out, and Andy's toys believe Woody is looking to kill another toy.

Using the remote control car, Woody rescues Buzz but is thrown overboard by Andy's toys. Now on the rc car with Buzz, Woody steers the car towards the moving truck, and Andy's toys realise Buzz is alive after all. However, the rc car runs out of power, and screeches to a halt.

Buzz has an idea to use Woody's match to ignite the rocket and propel them to the moving truck, but a padsing cat extinguishes the flame. Having an idea, Woody uses Buzz's helmet to magnify heat onto the rocket fuse, and the two blast towards the truck, throwing the rc car back in the truck.

The rocket flies straight up, carrying Buzz and Woody to their certain doom. Before it explodes, Buzz ejects his wings and cuts through the tape, falling down with Woody in hand. However, Buzz soars through the air, and Woody exclaims that he's flying. But Buzz corrects him, saying they're "falling with style".

The two toys glide towards Andy's car, and land in a box next to their owner, who is beyond delighted to find them, having believed he lost them earlier on. From there on, in Andy's new home, the two toys become proper friends, and integrate with new toys received by Andy on Christmas, as well as a new puppy.
