The City of Edinburgh Council is the local government covering the City of Edinburgh. There were 518,500 people living there mid-2019.
The council was set up in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994. Before that there was the City of Edinburgh District Council part of the Lothian region. That was set up in 1975. Before that there was a council based at the Old Tolbooth. Around 1130, David I made the town a royal burgh and a burgh council.
There are now 17 wards. They each elect three or four councillors by the single transferable vote. There are 63 councillors.
