The Communist Party of Bangladesh (Bengali: বাংলাদেশের কমিউনিস্ট পার্টি) is the main communist political party in Bangladesh. It started in 1968 as the East Pakistan branch of the Communist Party of Pakistan.[2]
After the Partition of India, the Communist Party of Pakistan split from the Communist Party of India. The party set up a branch in East Pakistan. Because East and West Pakistan were far apart and had different social and economic conditions, the East Pakistan branch formed a new party called the Communist Party of East Pakistan in 1968. The party took part in the 1969 mass uprising and the 1971 non-cooperation movement. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, it helped form a guerrilla force together with the Bangladesh Students' Union and the National Awami Party (Muzaffar). In 1975 the party joined the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League and was temporarily dissolved. It later took part in the 1990 mass uprising, the 2013 Shahbag protests, and the July 2024 mass uprising.[2]
The party follows Marxism–Leninism. It is organised by the rule of democratic centralism. The party says its goal is the "revolutionary democratic change of society and the state". After the Soviet Union ended, the party moved to a more progressive and democratic socialist position. Since 2025 it has been a leading member of the Democratic United Front, a group of left‑wing, anti-imperialist parties. Kazi Sajjad Zahir Chandan has been the party's president since 2025.[3]
