Dexter (TV series)

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dexter is an American television series created by the Showtime network. It is based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter written by Jeff Lindsay. The main character, Dexter, is played by Micheal C. Hall.

The series is about a serial killer named Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst who lives in Miami. He is known as the Bay Harbor Butcher, who kills other killers.

The series was received to high praise by critics and audiences alike for early seasons, but slowly declined into mixed reactions as the show progressed beyond Season 4. Similar reception was shown for the spinoff series Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin, but the 2025 series Dexter: Resurrection brought back the large amounts of success brought on by the early seasons of the original series.

Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter analyst who works for the Miami Metro Homicide Department in Miami. In secret, he is a serial killer, known to the public as the Bay Harbor Butcher, a murderer who is infamous for killing other murderers.

As the Bay Harbor Butcher, Dexter follows a very strict routine. When he discovers a potential target, he follows them and studies their habits and the places they go to. After that, when nobody is around, he kidnaps the victim by injecting them with a knockout chemical named M-99, and brings them to another location. In this place, he often covers the walls with plastic wrap and puts up pictures of the killer's victims where they can see them. Dexter then wakes up the victim using bath salts, and gets them to confess to what they did. Lastly, Dexter stabs them through the heart to kill them, and divides up the body into several pieces, which he bags up and throws into the ocean from his boat.

When Dexter was a child, his mother was murdered in front of him by members of a drug cartel for being a police informant. This implanted deep trauma into Dexter, later manifesting as an urge to kill.

Dexter was adopted by a police officer named Harry Morgan, with his daughter, Debra Morgan, who became Dexter's younger adopted sister. As Dexter grew up, Harry noticed that he was showing dark, violent urges. Frustrated with how ineffective the justice system was, Harry trained Dexter to focus his urges on to the murderers who escaped justice.

Dexter's first murder was on a nurse named Mary. She had been slowly poisoning Harry with chemical injections while he was admitted to the hospital. After getting his father's permission, Dexter abducted Mary and murdered her.

Dexter later joined the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter analyst, soon becoming one of the best in his field. His sister, Debra, become a police officer. Now as an adult, Dexter balances his "ordinary" life with the police department and his girlfriend Rita, with his secret life as the Bay Harbor Butcher.
