The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ) is one of the largest federal universities of Brazil. It is in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Established in 1920, it is the largest Brazilian Federal University as well as one the country's most prestigious universities.

The Federal University turned down an offer from the World Bank to buy the National Museum of Brazil. Their reason was that they did not wish to part with the ownership.[1] Now the Museum is in ruins.
