Francis Marion Drake was Iowa's 16th governor. Term: Jan 16, 1896 to Jan 13, 1898. Republican. Military: Army. Born 30 Dec 1830 Rushville, Schuyler, IL and died 20 Nov 1903 Centerville, Appanoose, IA with burial in Oakland Cemetery there. Married Mary Jane Lord (1833-1883). They had seven children. HIs parents were John Adams Drake 1802 Nashville Co., NC - 1880 Drakesville, Davis, IA and Harriet Jane O'Neal. Siblings of Francis M. Drake were: John Hamilton Drake 1828-1883, Nancy M. Drake 1836-1917 (married Lockman), Melissa Drake 1839-1848, Henrietta Drake 1842-1915 (married Carpenter), Marietta Drake 1850-1853, Kate Ella Drake 1853-1890 (married Lane). (Source: Find A Grave website, memorial #5024935.) On 28 March 1896 Francis Drake's daughter, Mary, christened the battleship USS Iowa.[1]
