It was first recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips and went to number 2 in the United States, number 3 in Canada and number 47 in Canada. The most famous recording is by Marvin Gaye and was taken from his eighth studio album In the Groove. It went to number 1 in the United Kingdom and the United States, number 2 in Poland, number 3 in South Africa, number 7 in Ireland and number 8 in Canada. It was also covered again by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1970 as an eleven minute song.
