Kemi Nelson

Kemi Nelson (9 February 1956 – 17 July 2022) was a Nigerian politician and nurse.

Nelson was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She went to Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. She later studied at the School of Nursing of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she became a registered nurse and midwife. She also received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in financial management and a diploma in law from Lagos State University.

Political career

Nelson joined the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the 1980s during the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida. In 1992, she was the NRC candidate for the Lagos West Senatorial District, but lost the election to Bola Tinubu.

In 1998, during the rule of General Sani Abacha, she was elected to represent the Ikeja Federal Constituency as a member of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). However, the government ended after Abacha died, and the election results were not used.

In 1999, Nelson joined the Alliance for Democracy (AD). From 1999 to 2003, she was the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation during the administration of Bola Tinubu. She later became the women's leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and later for the party's South West region.

Nelson also served on the Lagos State Governor's Advisory Council. She was Executive Director of Operations of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund and also led the Lagos State Ministry of Establishment, Training and Job Creation.

Death

Nelson died on 17 July 2022, aged 66.
