Laverne Cox is an American actress. She is best known for playing Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black, a Netflix series. Burset is a transgender woman in a women's prison.

She was born in Mobile, Alabama. She is a transgender woman.[1] She has a twin brother, M Lamar.[2]

Cox is making a documentary about CeCe McDonald, an African American transgender woman who was put in prison for killing a man who attacked her.[3] On January 13 2014 Cox met CeCe to drive her home after she was released from prison.[4] Cox spoke at the start of the 2014 National Gay and Lesbian Task Force conference Creating Change.[5] Cox was chosen as one of the 2014 grand marshalls for the New York City Pride March.[6]

Cox came fifth in the TIME 100 reader poll in 2014. After this happened Cox was put on the cover of Time magazine. She was the first transgender person to be on the cover.

Cox was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophie in Orange is the New Black.

Cox is a feminist.[7]
