Major Oak
53°12′16.70″N 1°4′20.80″W / 53.2046389°N 1.0724444°W Major Oak was a very large and old oak tree in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. The tree was famous because of the story of Robin Hood. It was one of the best known trees in England.[1]

Age and size
[change | change source]People estimated the Major Oak was many hundreds of years old. The tree had a very wide trunk. In the past, wooden supports were added to help hold its heavy branches.[2]
Protection
[change | change source]The Major Oak wad protected. The tree wad inside a fenced area to keep visitors from walking too near its roots. The National Trust cared for the tree with help from other organisations.[3]

[change | change source]Visitors came from many countries to see the Major Oak. There are paths, signs and a visitor centre in Sherwood Forest with information about the tree and local history.[4]
Death
[change | change source]Major Oak was reported to have died in June 2026 from stress caused by dry and extremely hot summers.[5]
