Marathon Motors Engineering, Plc. is a prominent joint venture between the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Company and Ethiopian long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie. Located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the company serves as the official general importer of Hyundai vehicles in Ethiopia. It is also involved in local vehicle assembly
History
[change | change source]Founded in 2009, Marathon Motors Engineering was established as a result of a partnership between Hyundai Motor Company and Haile Gebrselassie, a former ethiopian long-distance runner. The company made its debut at a press conference during the presentation of the Haile Resort in Awasa. Marathon Motors started assembling vehicles locally in Ethiopia, with a plant located in Nifas Silk-Lafto, Addis Ababa. This assembly plant, inaugurated in February 2019,[2] in July 2020, the company began assembling electric vehicles, including the Hyundai Ioniq.[3]
