Marisa Seepersaud is a Guyanese paediatric surgeon.[1] She was the only pediatric surgeon in the country of Guyana until 2021.[2] She provides surgical care for children and newborn babies.[2] She became one of the two surgeons in high demand later on.[2] Seepersaud is the head of paediatric surgeons at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).[3] She set up training programs that were not available in Guyana[2] She helped train people who want to become surgeons.[2] Seepersaud also introduced daycare surgeries that admitted patients within 24 hours of surgery.[2]

Early Life[change | change source]

Seepersaud grew up in Guyana. As a child, she wanted to become an astronaut. Due to the conditions and resources they had to keep in mind, she wasn’t able to continue her desire.[2]

After graduating from the University of Guyana School of Medicine, she went to study at the University of West Indies Jamaica, to learn more in-depth about the paediatric surgical program.[2]

Right after attending both universities, Seepsaud joined Baby Heart. Baby Heart is a non-profit team that focuses on performing surgeries around the world for children.[4]

Awards[change | change source]

In 2019, Seepersaud won the Canadian Association Paediatric Surgeon Global Scholar Award.[2]
