MediaWiki:Hiderevision-text

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the HideRevision (old "Oversight") tool. It is rare for this tool to be needed.

Please use the reversible RevisionDelete tool unless there is extremely good reason why even the existence of suppressed edit/s should be removed.

This is likely only in exceptional cases (e.g., harassment), where a suppressed revision is likely to make the problem worse by attracting attention or where the apparent object is to harass/cause distress.

Please consider noting cases where this tool is used, on functionaries-en or oversight-l to allow discussion of circumstances, and any need for a "full removal" tool.

Oversight should only be used for the following cases:

  • Nonpublic personal information
home addresses and telephone numbers, social security numbers, etc.
  • Potentially libelous information
either: a) on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel or b) when the subject has specifically asked for the information to be expunged from the history, the case is clear, and there is no editorial reason to keep the revision.
  • Copyright infringement
on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel.
  • Hiding of blatant attack names on automated lists and logs, where this does not disrupt edit histories
A blatant attack is one obviously intended to denigrate, threaten, libel, insult, or harass someone.

Abuse of this system will result in loss of privileges.

Removed items will not be visible to anyone through the web site, but the deletions are logged and can be restored manually by a database administrator if you make a mistake (log of oversighted edits).
