The pink grasshopper (Pseudochorthippus parallelus) has a unique pink colour. It owes its striking color to a genetic mutation called erythrism. Unlike the typical green or brown grasshoppers, these rare insects exhibit a reddish or pinkish hue.

Rare occurrence[change | change source]

Pink grasshoppers are exceptionally uncommon in the wild. Their striking coloration sets them apart from the typical green or brown grasshoppers. These rare insects owe their pink hue to a genetic mutation called erythrism. Unlike the majority of grasshoppers, which blend into their surroundings, pink grasshoppers stand out.[1]

Genetic mutation[change | change source]

Erythrism is responsible for the pink color. It affects the pigmentation of the grasshopper’s exoskeleton. While adult male grasshoppers are usually green, females can exhibit various shades, including pink. Interestingly, most females change color as they age.[2]

Survival challenges[change | change source]

Bright pink grasshoppers face survival challenges due to their intense color. Their conspicuous appearance makes them easy targets for predators. Despite these challenges, some pink grasshoppers manage to survive and pass on the “pink gene” to their offspring.[3]

History[change | change source]

  1. Historical origins:
    • Erythrism in grasshoppers was first described in 1887 in a species of longicorn grasshoppers.
    • Since then, sightings of pink grasshoppers have been sporadic, making them an extremely rare occurrence.
  2. Notable encounters:
    • One of the earliest documented encounters occurred in Devon, England. An 11-year-old boy named Daniel Tate had the honor of spotting a pink grasshopper during a wildlife event in Seaton.
    • In recent times, sightings have occurred across the United Kingdom and even in some parts of the United States.
  3. Gary phillips’ discovery:
    • Another remarkable sighting happened in Wales, where amateur photographer Gary Phillips was pruning dahlias in his garden.
    • He was stunned by the vivid color of a pink grasshopper at the bottom of his garden in Llandegfan, Anglesey.
    • By some estimates, the chances of encountering a pink grasshopper in one’s lifetime could be as low as one percent.
  4. Appreciating their beauty:
    • Despite their rarity, enthusiasts and nature lovers appreciate the beauty of these unique insects.
    • Conservationists like Paul Hetherington have seen pink grasshoppers and find them truly wonderful.[4]
