Reeve (England)

In Anglo-Saxon England, a Reeve was a local official with administrative responsibilities under the Crown.

The main responsibilities of a reeve were:

- Administering the King's estates

- Collecting food renders from churls in order to supply the visiting royal court

- Monitoring labour services (such as unpaid work done by churls on the behalf of the landowner)

- Maintaining law and order at a local level
