Sönke Günther (born 18 June 2001) is a German football goalkeeper.

Career[change | change source]

Clubs[change | change source]

Günther started his football career at TSV Oberbrüden, later joined FSV Waiblingen and in 2014 moved to the talent center academy of VfB Stuttgart. For the 2016/17 season, he moved to the B2 Juniors (U16) of FC Schalke 04, before moving up to the B1 Juniors for the 2017/18 season, with whom he played under Frank Fahrenhorst in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga. For the 2018/19 season, Günther moved to the A Juniors of SC Freiburg (U19).

In June 2019, Günther signed his first professional contract with third league team Chemnitzer FC with a term until 30 June 2022.[1] Even after the season interruption from March to May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chemnitzer FC did not manage to leave the relegation places and the club was relegated to the Regionalliga Nord/Ost.

After only one season with the Saxons, Günther moved on a free transfer to Hamburger SV in October 2020.[2] The season was also interrupted due to rising infection levels caused by the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of October. After a month-long break, the 2020–21 season was ended early.

National team[change | change source]

Günther was first invited to join the German U15 national team by Michael Feichtenbeiner in 2015.[3]
