Self-replicating spacecraft

Self-replicating spacecrafts, or Von-Neumann probes, are self-replicating machines.

Hypothetically, they might one day exist. They would do it by removing material from asteroids, comets, planets etc to make more of themselves. The idea has figured in some space fiction writing, including 2001: A Space Odyssey.
